In 2012 we began using South Poll bulls on our "commercial" black angus herd and have been keeping the heifers that breed back as two year-olds, so that they end up with their 2nd calf at age three. As a general rule we do not supplement our cattle other than salt, mineral, and hay. We sell steers through the local stockyard or to grass-fed feeder operations as opportunities arise. We sell bred cows and heifers in late summer or early fall. We try to follow the advice and philosophies of Teddy Gentry, Burke Teichert, and Johann Zietsmann in cattle selection and breeding. Teddy Gentry has done us southern ranch and cattle owners a great service by breeding a composite that thrives in the heat, humidity, and fescue laden pastures of this part of the world. The South Poll breed has been a kind of silver bullet for the profitably and sustainability of our ranch in Mountain View, Missouri.
